On February 5, join the Empire Club of Canada for a keynote speech by Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem, moderated by Rita Trichur, Senior Business Writer and Columnist for the Report on Business. In his address and the fireside chat that will follow, the Governor will share key insights into the main forces shaping Canada’s economy and their implications for monetary policy. Hear directly from one of Canada’s foremost economic leaders as he delivers his first major speech of 2026.
Tiff Macklem was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in June 2020 for a seven-year term.
As Governor, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements or BIS. In addition, he chairs the Group of Governors and Heads of Supervision, he chairs the Financial Stability Board’s Standing Committee for the Assessment of Vulnerabilities, and he co-chairs the FSB Regional Consultative Group for the Americas.
Mr. Macklem first joined the Bank of Canada in 1984 and held various senior positions including Chief of Research and Advisor to the Governor. He was appointed a Deputy Governor in 2004 and Senior Deputy Governor in 2010.
During the Global Financial Crisis, Mr. Macklem was Associate Deputy Minister at the Department of Finance, and represented Canada at the G7, G20 and FSB.
From 2014 until his appointment as Governor, Mr. Macklem was the Dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
Rita Trichur is an award-winning journalist. She is a Senior Business Writer and Columnist in the Report on Business. Her previous roles at The Globe and Mail include Senior Editor, Financial Services Editor, and Canadian business columnist for the Report on Business Magazine. Rita returned to Globe in July 2016 after spending about 2 ½ years as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal’s Canada bureau. She primarily covered domestic banks and insurance companies from Toronto, but also wrote a variety of other stories about Canada for the U.S. newspaper.
