The Empire Club of Canada is excited to host Hon. Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador to share a look at the momentum across sectors in his province, and his government’s ongoing work to position Newfoundland and Labrador to fully maximize its potential.

Through ongoing engagement with fellow Premiers, the federal government, the private sector, and all stakeholders, the Premier is celebrating the province’s assets nationally and on the world stage. With everything from critical minerals to wind and hydrogen, a beautiful, safe place to live, work, and raise a family, and a tourism industry that can offer bucket list adventures for visitors of all ages, Newfoundland and Labrador is writing a new chapter in its storied history.

Hon. Dr. Andrew Furey

Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey was sworn in as Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador on August 19, 2020. He is also Leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, Premier Dr. Andrew Furey is a passionate orthopaedic trauma surgeon and educator with Memorial University’s School of Medicine.

Premier Furey has a diverse education, which includes a Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Oxford University and a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology from Memorial. His strong work ethic has earned him many local, provincial, and national awards and honours. He was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Canadian Red Cross and earned the Governor General of Canada’s Meritorious Service Cross.

In 2010, he helped create Team Broken Earth to provide medical relief after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. This Newfoundland and Labrador-born charity has since expanded in size and scope. Today, over 1,500 volunteers from across Canada, the US, and UK have participated in medical missions to Haiti as well as Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. On top of that, Premier Furey helped found A Dollar A Day Foundation to support mental health initiatives across Canada.

Premier Furey enjoys spending time with his wife, Allison, and their children Maggie, Rachael and Mark. He credits his family for helping him stay grounded and maintain his perspective on what matters most – love, empathy, and making a difference.

Tim Powers is Chair of Summa Strategies, a leading Canadian public affairs consulting firm, and the Managing Director of Abacus Data, an opinion research company, both headquartered in Ottawa. He is also the host of the “Tim Powers Show” on VOCM radio in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as regular contributor to CBC’s “Power and Politics”.

He also writes a weekly column for “The Hill Times” Newspaper. Currently, Tim serves on the boards Memorial University, Melanoma Canada and the Jack Purcell Recreation Association. He is also a Class B member of the Canadian Olympic Committee. Tim is the Past Chairman of Rugby Canada, Past Lead Director of the Park Lawn Corporation and a former trustee at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH).

Tim has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a Master of Arts degree (Atlantic Canada Studies) from St. Mary’s University, and a Master of Sciences degree (Media and Communications) from the London School of Economics. Mr. Powers has also studied Public Sector Management and Alternative Investing at Harvard University. He is also a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and has his ICD.D designation.

Tim also is a Boston Marathon finisher having completed the 126th Boston Marathon in April, 2022.
